Nothing was earthshatteringly wrong. Like so many of us, Kelli Suchy just felt... blah.
Three years of unsuccessful infertility treatments had taken a toll on the 42 year-old Redwood City, California, woman. Even after the sadness of her infertility had passed, she'd fallen into a slump – and couldn't get herself out of it.
"You need to lose weight," her doctor cautioned, suggesting the 40 pounds she'd gained could be the reason. Atkins to Weight Watchers, she tried every diet. But the scale wouldn't budge.
And Kelli wasn't convinced her weight was the only problem. There had to be a reason she felt tired, fuzzy-headed and grouchy.
"Will I ever feel like 'me' again? I feel like I'm never going to be myself again," she told her husband, Andrew.
Then one day, she spotted a book in the self-help section: When
Your Body Gets the Blues, by Marie-Anette Brown, Ph.D., R.N., of the University of Washington.
The book talked about the mild depression many woman suffer from – marked by low energy, weight gain, insomnia and loss of libido.
That's me! Kelli thought.
And the book offered a suprising explanation. According to the author, lack of sunlight and exercise – plus a shortage of serotonin, the brain's "feel good" chemical – were the culprits.
The cure? Taking a brisk daily walk, getting lots of sunshine during the day, turning the lights down in the evening and taking a vitamin
and mineral supplement.
It sounded almost too easy. Still... What have I got to lose? Kelli decided.
So the next day, she went for a walk after breakfast. And though she was normally a night owl, after dinner, she turned down the lights and relaxed until bedtime. And after a few days...
"I feel good!" Kelli could barely believe the change. She was sleeping better, waking refreshed and feeling energetic all day. And four weeks later when she stepped on a scale... "I lost five pounds!" she marveled.
And this program was so easy – and so effective – Kelli stuck with it, losing 40 pounds and dropping from a size 14 to a size 8!
Today, Kelli, who adopted a baby girl named Ariel, is healthier and happier than ever.
"Before, I truly did have the blues – mind, body and spirit," she says. "It feels wonderful to be myself again!"
